En dialogue avec des artistes représentés dans la collection Argos, Constant interroge le potentiel d’une archive de medias en ligne. En croisant des projections, des interviews en direct et des présentations, nous parlerons de la propriété légale et morale, de contrats, de licences, d’annotation et d’accès.
Constant a lancé le projet Active Archives en 2006 en constatant que la plupart des archives en ligne fonctionnent sur le principe traditionnel du "nous" (l’institution) vous transmettons l’information à "vous" (les visiteurs). Elles sont faites à l’image des boîtes d’archives physiques, mettant l’accent sur la préservation et l’intégrité de l’objet individuel plutot que sur la possibilité de créer des liens et de se multiplier en partageant les ressources des collections digitales. Elles ne sont certainement pas présentées comme un moyen de créer des oeuvres dérivées. Si nous considérons l’internet pas seulement comme un moyen de distribution mais comme un espace d’écriture (collaborative), le prototypage, et le développement d’idées, comment les archives peuvent-elles participer à cette culture du réseau? Que faut-il mettre en place pour offrir un materiau qui peut nous revenir transformé? Comment les documents peuvent s’enrichir de connections, de différents contextes et de contradictions?

In dialogue with artists represented in the Argos collection, Constant interrogates the active potential of the online media archive. Mixing screenings, live-interviews and presentations, we will discuss moral and legal ownership, contracts and licenses, annotation and access.
Constant started the Active Archives project in 2006 with the observation that most online archives fall into the traditional model of ’we’ (the institution) transmitting information to ’you’ (the visitor). They recreate the physical archivists’ box, prioritising preservation and integrity of the single object over the link-ability and potential for multiplication through sharing that digital collections could thrive on. They are certainly not presented as a means for creating derivative works. If we understand the web not simply as a means of distribution, but a space for (collaborative) writing, prototyping, and developing ideas, how can archives take part in this net-nature? How can archives be active beyond preservation and access? What would it take to give material away and receive it transformed? How would files be enriched by different connections, contexts and contradictions?

In dialoog met kunstenaars die zijn vertegenwoordigd in de Argos collectie ondervraagt Constant het actieve potentieel van online media archieven. In een mix van screenings, live interviews en presentaties worden vanuit moreel en artistiek perspectief eigendom, contracten en licenties, annotatie en toegangskwesties bediscussieerd.
Constant startte het Active Archives-project in 2006 vanuit de observatie dat de meeste online archieven vasthouden aan het traditionele model waarbinnen ’wij’ (instituten) informatie geven aan ’u’ (de bezoeker).
Ze herscheppen de fysieke archiefdoos waarbij voorrang wordt gegeven aan integriteit van het unieke object boven de linkbaarheid en potentiële verveelvuldiging door distributie waar digitale collecties hun kracht van zouden kunnen maken.
Ze worden al helemaal zelden gepresenteerd als een basis voor afgeleide creatieve werken. Als we het web niet enkel opvatten als een distributiekanaal, maar als een plaats we (collaboratief) schrijven, prototypes en ideeën ontwikkelen, hoe kunnen archieven dan deel nemen in deze net-cultuur? Hoe kunnen archieven actief verder gaan dan preserveren en toegang bieden? Wat is nodig om materiaal weg te geven en getransformeerd terug te ontvangen? Hoe zouden bestanden kunnen worden verrijkt met connecties, contexten en tegenstellingen?
