The Æthers (by Claire Williams and Dvora Levy) is a space for the preservation and reactivation of ’techniques of the invisible’ found in the archives of the experimental and occult sciences of the 19th and 20th centuries.
While techniques of the invisible are still imported from elsewhere, The Æthers seeks to trace other lineages by delving into the histories of industrial societies, a context in which these practices were shaped by contact with science and technology. There would be no telephone or telegraph if there had not been spiritual communications and mediums. On both sides of the line we now draw between science and non-science, the researchers of the invisible were driven by the same ambition: to reveal a world imperceptible to humans. They shared concepts, instruments, institutions, relationships and dinners, which for some became spaces of experimentation and freedom outside the system of class and gender exclusion. In this abundant ensemble, we find many women, a different relationship to the body, an approach that is more qualitative than quantitative, collectives, multiple worlds that are becoming active...
Among other techniques, The Æthers investigate clairvoyance and occult chemistry, aura electrophotography, concave mirrors that alter space-time, astral travel in parallel realities, spiritism, instrumental transcommunication, thought photography, remote vision, ectoplasm materialisation, mass telepathy using radio, radionics...
To make Cosmic Foam Traditions No. 1, the artists worked with Eve, who is part of an internet community of shifters. From their archives, they designed a script that allows Eve to shift into the desired reality that is ultimately the spectral world assumed by The Æthers.
The installation Cosmic Foam Traditions No. 1 - The Æthers takes part in Parcours d’artistes Saint-Gilles 2022.
