21C/19C. Procedures for Anthropometric Image Reversal
Through the lenses of 19th century photographers, the visual artist Antje Van Wichelen dives into the clichés and underlying motives of the Western colonial anthropometric collections and their view on the ’Other’. Using stop-motion methods, manual 16mm film development and printing, stretches of film rolls and magnifying glasses, Antje re-writes these images and proposes us a more sensitive regard.
During her artists research, focusing on the photographed people, tracing down historical and contextual elements, she encountered the surprisingly diverse policies of the archives holding these photo-collections. At the opening of her installation in the window of Constant, we will all be invited to take part in her "burning" performance: how to use the images? What can be shown/not shown?
Opening: 15.09.2016 | 18:00, performance: 19:00
