In the Mexican coyote cartography, the fire was kept by a circle of unreachable flies, the world outside of the circle was left in the darkness. The coyote ran inside and put its tail on fire and then she burned the forest around; by this act the fire was set free and became accessible for everyone again.
By this holistic figure, we will explore counter knowledge. We will play together with the camouflage of our inner self, and looking for strategy to confront the surveillance technologies. This technopaganism workshop, will involve our body as a weapon, shapeshifting, discomfort, grey zone. Developing a language without words, as they listen to our whispers, we play with how the information we transmit can only become visible between the ones we trust.

When: Saturday 18 April from 11:00 to 17:00
Where: Constant Studio, Chaussée de Jette 388 Koekelberg

It started with Leo Ren and Flo*Souad cooking for and with people who like to mess around with their hormones and gender. The recipes came from their self-taught research on phytohormones and their Moroccan and Japanese cultural influences. In order to share these recipes, they organised participatory workshops and public events.
Together, they compiled a corpus which stimulated the desire to create a wiki; to document and preserve what was happening and what they wanted to happen. Doriane Timmermans joined the project in 2023 as a friend and collaborator to discuss the first temporary web platform and then to work on the creation of the wiki, supported by Constant.

Constant is very happy to invite you to the launch of its third publication under the SPLINT research trajectory: Otherworldly Communications!
In 2025 Constant's research focused on how different forms of life co/exist and circulate in the midst of damage and toxicity and how we could critically engage with different conceptions of the 'other' (as in: other than human, otherworldly and otherings). This publication tells a subjective and multi-voiced story about discoveries and encounters (…)

This publication tells a subjective and multi-voiced story about discoveries and encounters that happened during the unfolding of our activities.

It was compiled during a three day sprint by Constant's team, guided by graphic designer Sarah Magnan*, and printed at chez rosi* in Brussels using the software Octomode by Creative Crowds.

It will soon be available in print format as well as in web format/pdf on Constant Calibre library.

During the event, we'll have live contributions by some of the artists that accompanied us in this trajectory, such as Joke Caimo, Blise Orr, Varia*.

You are very welcome to join us for this festive launch. Snacks and drinks will be provided in this early evening hour.

*Bios

Joke Caimo is an undisciplined artivist, media artist, and inventor of objects and instruments.

Blise Orr's practice critically breaks through the boundaries of architecture as a discipline and reconsiders how spatial design influences ideologies of ecology in relation to our post-natural environment.

During its 2023-2027 artistic programme, Constant publishes an annual Zine showing a subjective overview of what happened during the year. The focus of 2025 was on Otherworldly communications, a research around interspecies cohabitation and communication. In this small, subjective publication we try to recount our experiences, reflections, discoveries and perplexities.
The publication will be made collectively using octomode, a system that allows to have a publication balancing collective (…)

The publication will be made collectively using octomode, a system that allows to have a publication balancing collective workflows and experimental additions; the writing of the publication is done on several computers connected to the same etherpad, and then styled through templates and stylesheets, and outputs such as html texts, images, audio recordings, drawings and much more. The making and finalising of the zine will be facilitated by graphic designer Sarah Magnan and it will be printed by at Chez Rosi in Brussels as well as be available as pdf on Constant Calibre online repository.

Keep an eye on our website for the announcement of the festive launch, which will take place in the first half of 2026!

During 2026 Constant's research focuses on the question of technologies of repression and control used at borders.

Unbordering is a call to critically and radically rethink the technological apparatus of visual control erected near and far from European borders. It is a dive into repressive and authoritarian technologies as an internalisation of the violent politics of Fortress Europe. Unbordering examines border technologies in order to unravel the ways in which the border becomes a means of making violent cuts, literally and figuratively, across bodies, lives, livelihoods, cultures, nations and ecosystems.

This long-term artistic research, initially begun out of necessity, has taken the form of visual installations as well as textile objects and publications, which have circulated in queer circles.

In 2023, following an online residency, the collaboration with Leo Ren O'Faigain blossomed with Infusion2Gâteau, a first recipe composed of phytohormonal ingredients that was sent by email. We began to pool our research and imagine other recipes with the desire to put in practice our questions about gender in a 'gourmand' way. Nourished and inspired by online and offline self-support networks, we want to make accessible the corpus we are building. In 2024, with Doriane Timmermans, the idea of a tool for collective work, archiving, and dissemination of the project began to take shape: the hormonobotanik.wiki

Since November 2025, hormonobotanik is using the vitrine of Constant as a physical interface to connect to the wiki evolution, but also as a place to make visible the process at work.

On Saturday 31st January, a ‘web-to-screen printing' workshop based on the wiki content and other resources on trans identities will conclude this chapter of the project. Subscribe to the workshop by sending a mail to info@constantvzw.org

Workshop Saturday 31-01-26 from 11:00 till 17:00

The aim is to explore how smartphones from a different generation (2012>2020) can, once combined together, provide new interactive possibilities through their panel of various sensors (gyroscopes, NFC chip readers, etc) in addition to the touch screen. In this workshop, we will explore how Zombitron can be combined with external sensors as well. We will develop new sensors to build even richer Zombitrons.

We will use premade experimental buttons and we will develop other diy sensors and hopefully play with them with the help of esp32's.
We have invited Zombitron developer Clara Rigaud & artist developer Rebekka Jochem* to join us in our experiments.

We will work on two levels
– code: programming esp32's to interact with Zombitron ( via the network and the browsers of the phones)
– tinkering: make and finetune DIY sensors, like experimental buttons, to be able to connect to Zombitron

New date >>

Where physical and digital infrastructure meet amphibians and other beings in Neder-Over-Heembeek

In short:

On January the 10th, 2026 we will be using cycling and walking as a research method to explore two areas in the north of Brussels, where human development and the natural world collide. We look at the way tools and systems are used to record data, count species and their relationship with infrastructure. In these landscapes we see everyday, we want to show hidden layers.

In the morning we cycle around the canal and the river Zenne/Senne, starting at Maison de la Creation NOH. We look at the history, past and present of buildings, waterways in relation to plant and animal life, including humans.

In the afternoon we meet at Korte Groenweg 99 Petit Chemin Vert to walk. We combine two ways of looking at that area: through the eyes of migrating amphibians and by means of naming species. Both methods of looking have their problems, which we will touch upon and make new stories. Rotterdam based artists from Varia and Blise Orr will join us in making them. A part will be in English, we will include spontaneous translations.

As we know this area for about two and a half years, we offer a recent point of view. This is a story open for change over time, hopefully with more voices and narratives.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Please enroll by sending an e-mail to wendy@constantvzw.org
> lunch is available if you mail us before 06-01-2026
> please provide information around food allergies
> mention what part of the day you will join (morning, meal, afternoon)
In case of bad weather, we will provide an alternative programme

10:30-12:30 Bicycle tour around the canal
Departure @ Maison de la Creation Neder-Over-Heembeek, Sint-Nikolaasplein 3 Place Saint-Nicolas
Tram 10, stop Zavelput
12:30 -14:00 Vegetarian lunch
thai cuisine at Maison de la Creation (reservation required by mail)
14:30 - 17:00 Performing the past and Linnaean stretching
Departure @ Korte Groenweg 99 Petit Chemin vert (entrance sports complex)
Tram 10, stop Nelson Mandela

Accessibility
> Lunch in Maison de la creation is wheelchair accessible
> The bike tour has some steep hills
> The walk is mostly on roads, a section is quite steep. Another part is a more narrow dirt track that can be muddy. There is an accessible tramstop nearby.
> We provide child care in the afternoon, walking along the same path, please mail us before 06-01-2026 so we know

Language
> The main language of communication is English.
> Whisper translation to French and Dutch can be organised on the spot.

Full story:
The workshop looks at a multilayered corner of Neder-Over-Heembeek which we have been closely following for the past year under the header of Otherworldly communications.

In the morning we wander around by bike near the canal, touching on key sites of change and friction between humankind and the more than human world. Through past, current and future projections we get a faint feeling of what once was and of what can be. Canals, castles, viaducts, datacentres, the (natural) landscape gets shaped in different ways over time. We can only catch a glimpse of how organisms and particular species perceive and experience that world.
In the afternoon the walk starts at the Sports centre in Neder-over-Heembeek (NOH Mandela stadium). At a slow pace, we focus on ways of helping amphibians migrate without them being present. We travel back in time and highlight key points on the route in which the animals have encountered struggle, unrest and altercations due to decisions made by urban planning. We look at data, counting species and the relationship with infrastructure. Varia gives a cartographer's twist to the walk as they temporarily change location in their 'Common dirt' series*, from Rotterdam to Brussels.

Throughout the walk, participants are encouraged to record, observe and consider new ways of looking at the everyday landscapes they encounter. One method explored will be engaging with the app Obsidentify. After a very brief introduction to the classic scientific Linnaean and Latin based methodology of categorising the more-than-human world that is the foundation of the obsidentify platform, participants are then invited to engage critically with the information the application provides. Rather than accepting the identifications and expert responses at face value, they are encouraged to question, reinterpret and play with these classifications. By resisting the ‘expert' labels generated by the app, participants can begin to reclaim their observations and form a compelling argument against these so-called truths. Though digital by design, participants are welcome to explore these topics together in this informal group setting. No smartphone is required for this workshop.

Blise Orr's practice critically breaks through the boundaries of architecture as a discipline and reconsiders how spatial design influences ideologies of ecology in relation to our post-natural environment.

Join us for two study days on the 10 & 11 December around the figure of the urban rat in the context of the yearly trajectory called Otherworldly communications.
These study days are meant to critically engage with different conceptions of the 'other' as in: other than human, otherworldly and otherings. We convoke the figure of the urban rat to speak about notions of invasiveness and out-of-place-ness, and to examine how the gesture of othering normalises and fuels systemic violence.

These study days will bring us closer to so-called invasive/unwanted species while discussing biosocial order, sterile urban spaces and, consequently, who gets to (visibly) occupy them.

During these two days, we will scratch at several layers through a visit to the Sewer Museum of Brussels, contributions and activations from the Invasive Species Working Group, collective readings and a speculative writing session by Maru Mushtrieva.*

*Bio's

The Invasive Species Working Group will be represented by Yi Zang and Hwa Young Jung
Yi Zang designed the board game Rat King: Migration of the Brown Rat. This board game is designed around the transnational, trans-century migration trajectory of the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, dock rat, Hanover rat, or Norwegian rat. Their numerous names may reflect the species' long journey and its many encounters with humans across different times, spaces, and regions.
Originating in northern China, Mongolia and Siberia, the brown rat has now spread to every continent except Antarctica. They have become the most widespread rodent across most of Europe and North America, firmly established in worldwide ecosystems.

A “rat king” is a rare phenomenon in which a group of rats becomes physically tangled together by their tails, which has been recorded in many parts of the world. Yi understands it as a kind of glitch in everyday reality, an entanglement that appears when enough encounters and conditions allow it to emerge. Through this game, we will collectively speculate on the movements of brown rat families and explore how their migration paths intersect with climate change, colonial navigation, human expansion, global trade, and ongoing efforts to eradicate them. What other forms of glitches might emerge within this continual flow of reality?

Hwa Young Jung has a practice of co-creating projects, often using games and play to explore social issues.
She is working on an international collaboration between Liverpool (UK) and Seoul (South Korea) to co-create an extravagant K-pop music video about how to live harmoniously with urban wild animals on a changing planet.
Exploring the intersection of the climate emergency and migrant justice, we question ideas ‘native', ‘alien', ‘invasive' when applied to animals and what parallels might we draw between government policies towards urban wildlife and the treatment of people in new lands - all through the joy of K-pop.

Maru Mushtrieva is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker based in Berlin and Brussels. With a diverse practice spanning across performance art, sound installations, and collaborative projects, their work explores themes of identity, social dynamics, hosting, material storytelling and the intersection of extractive practices and technology with contemporary society and environment.

Participation + Reservation

Participation is free.

Registration is open until the 4th December

Reservation is required as places are limited; first come, first served.

Please, reserve by sending an email to: sarah@constantvzw.org

The two days will start at 10:00 till 17:30, with several breaks throughout the day

Vegetarian lunch will be provided on both days by the wonderful APUS & les cocottes volantes

We can provide childcare for Wednesday afternoon.

Please let us know when you make your reservation whether you need care for your little one(s) and if you have food allergies via sarah@constantvzw.org

Accessibility

The two days (except the visit to the museum) will take part in the studio of Constant

Address: Jetsesesteenweg 388 Chaussée de Jette, 1081 Koekelberg (Brussels)

Wheelchair accessible entrance + toilet + meeting space

Parking in the street is usually available, we can block a parking spot if asked in advance.

Language

The main language of communication is English.

Whisper translation to French and Dutch can be organised on the spot.

**Image**
This drawing made by A.L. Tarter around the 1940S is titled A rat leaving a ship via the mooring rope, thus spreading the plague. It was aimed at the making of an educational film showing the transmission and effects of the plague, especially the role of rats. Now contemporary researches contest the major role the rats have allegedly played in the spreading of the plague.

Not to mention that group messages and individual communications are all in the same application.

But the choice of application, and more specifically, the entity that owns it, is not as trivial as it seems. WhatsApp, the best-known service, is often imposed without any thought or consensus. And when we say it imposes itself, we mean that we impose it on those who want to join the group.

This workshop, offers in collaboration with 'Amis de la Terre', will be an opportunity to explore the issues involved in choosing a messaging platform, discover alternatives, and try one of them out in practice: Matrix.

Practical information:

Location: Le DK, Denemarkenstraat 70b Rue de Danemark 70b, 1060 Saint-Gilles | Sint-Gillis (near Place Bethléem)

17:00: Reception open

18:30: Presentation followed by a workshop

More information: info@ateliers-dk.be

Please note: this venue is not fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. If this applies to you, please contact us in advance of the workshop so that we can prepare the venue to accommodate you.

–

Every 2nd Monday of the month, these critical reflection encounters propose to address topics related to the digital (e.g. algorithms, surveillance capitalism, ecological impacts, etc.) and to explore alternative ways of doing things (discovery of free and ethical tools, de-gluing of smartphones, protection of communications, etc.).

These meetings are organised by Neutrinet and Constant's partner, Tactic.

Join us for this last session of the year where we introduce slow-simmered Cantonese herbal soup traditions through a shared commitment to speculative, intersectional, and embodied technologies of care. In this hands-on session, soup-making becomes both a medium and a method, which is a living technology that carries kinship, memory, metabolic and cultural knowledge. We will engage in a practice that resists extractive logics of efficiency, reclaiming domestic and sensory processes as rich sites of knowledge-making.

Cantonese Soup as a Fluid Archive is an ongoing artistic project through which Biyi explores kinship as a form of care that extends beyond blood relations, encompassing chosen, circumstantial, and interdependent forms of connection. From sensory memory to cultural knowledge and bodily nourishment, Biyi asks: how might we rethink kinship, not only through ancestry or genetics, but through the act of eating? What kinds of relationships become possible through shared metabolic entanglements, gendered labour, and the quiet wisdom of culinary care?

The act of touching, smelling, and tasting becomes an exchange between human and non-human ingredients, between past and present, between care as ritual, care as infrastructure and care as cultural making. Through shared gestures and collective nourishment, this workshop opens a space for reimagining what technology can mean when rooted in relationality, reciprocity, and lived experience.

We'll begin with an introduction to Chinese medicinal herbs sourced from the city's Chinese grocery stores, exploring their uses and meanings in traditional Cantonese soup-making. In this special deep-autumn session, Biyi will explain the core principles and key ingredients of Cantonese soup and guide participants in tailoring a soup that reflects the season of deep autumn.

Participants will break into small groups to create their own versions of herbal soup, guided by Biyi. You'll be encouraged to experiment, incorporate your own chosen (and brought) ingredients, and weave in personal memories and interpretations. While the soups simmer, Biyi will share stories of growing up with Cantonese soup, the domestic practice of traditional Chinese medicine, and her creative journey as a Cantonese migrant.

The session will conclude with a communal tasting, discussion, and sharing not only the soups created together but also the memories, stories, and recipes infused into each bowl.

*Bios

Biyi Zhu is an interdisciplinary artist, performer and researcher born in Southeast China and based in the Netherlands, who works with video art, documentary and technology-integrated performance. Based on her own experiences, her work explores mobility, migration and coexistence, reflecting on how these forces shape identities, relationships and socio-political realities.

Where: Constant Studio, Jetsesteenweg 388 Chaussée de Jette, 1081 Koekelberg, Brussels
Accessibility : The Studio is fully accessible for wheelchairs. More info about accessibility here
Language: The workshop will be held mainly in English.
Registration: Places are limited so, registration is required. please email imane@constantvzw.org

Here are some suggestions to guide your choice between bringing meat or vegetables:
• If you bring vegetables, please avoid strong-smelling vegetables like onions, garlic, or coriander.
• If you have any specific questions or are uncertain about the Chinese herb ingredients, feel free to reach out to Biyi. (bzhu@bitsray.co) She'll be happy to help you!
• If you bring meat, preferably white meat, such as chicken, pork, or fish. (but think of dietary restrictons of other participants like halal or vegetarian)

Hormonobotanik is a project focusing on medicinal plants, their phytohormonal properties and their uses in transition processes, initiated by Flo*Souad Benaddi in 2019.

In 2024, with Doriane Timmermans, the idea of a tool for collective work, archiving, and dissemination of the project began to take shape.

Over the next few weeks, we will therefore occupy the space offered by Constant by planting, watering, and cultivating this tool in the form of a wiki. The window will be used as a physical interface to connect to the wiki evolution, but also as a place to make visible the process at work.

Anne-Laure Buisson, Gijs de Heij, and An Mertens welcome you to a three-hour workshop around the Tree Times installation.
One of the installation's components is the diaries of the three Scots pines. You can request fragments via text message. Each fragment consists of two parts: an automatically generated sentence based on the measured data from the trees, and a handwritten fragment. Each fragment consists of two parts: an automatically generated sentence based on the measured data from the trees, and a handwritten fragment. The fragments are sent via a Python script running on Termux, an app you can install on a smartphone that provides an Android phone with a terminal, a basic computer interface.

During this workshop, we will look at how to easily generate automatic sentences based on a spreadsheet. You are welcome to bring your own spreadsheet with data!
Depending on time and enthousiasm, we will also explore the automatic sending of the generated sentences via text message.

You are very welcome!
No programming experience is necessary; being interested is enough. Please bring a laptop and an Android phone if you have one.

Opening: Tuesday 07 - 10 - 2025 18:00 → 21:00
Workshop: Thursday 30 – 10 – 2025 18:00 → 21:00

When does a tree's sap start flowing, when do trees get to work in the morning, when does their trunk grow most? During one year, the artists of the Anaïs Berck collective* measured the movements of three Scots Pines in three nature reserves in Flanders, with the intention of designing tree clocks. They recorded their movements using sensors that measure the expansion and contraction of the trunk, CO2 absorption, air temperature and humidity, and sunlight.

Although the three trees live in similar habitats — the sandy and heathland soil of the Kalmthoutse Heide, Bosland National Park, and De Liereman — their internal clocks show significant differences. Should that be surprising?

The project was inspired by the idea of criptime, a notion of time invoked by people for whom normative time often doesn't meet their needs. A workday from 9 till 5, a route from A to B which should take ten minutes to walk according to the algorithm's prediction; but also life events that would normally occur, such as living autonomously, getting married, having children.

Therefore, Anaïs Berck created a data work displaying all the observations, along with the phases of the moon and the seasons. A web app also displays the detailed data for those interested in delving deeper into the observations. And finally, a tree clerk took the time to communicate with the trees and compiled a diary. It includes unusual days, whether due to tree activity, weather conditions, or the start of a new season. You can request a fragment of the diary via text message.

–
Activities around this project

A workshop around this installation will take place on Thursday 30 October in Constant's office.

The installation runs simultaneously in Constant, the Kalmthoutse Heide/De Vroente, Landschap De Liereman, and Pijnven/National Park Bosland. There you can also participate in a moment of encounter, sharing and walks.
You find more information here.

*Biography and acknowledgments

This project is a work of Anaïs Berck, an artistic collective of humans, trees, and algorithms:

We know you're fed up. So are we. Another year of zoom meetings, google calendar and sharepoint folders to be seemingly smoothly (…)

"Dear organiser, worker in a public institution, tutor, student, activist,
We know you're fed up. So are we. That's why we decided to write you this letter: as we are facing down another September-September still stuck with everyday digital infrastructures provided by companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI and HP that are, as we know, involved in militarization and genocide. Another year of zoom meetings, google calendar and sharepoint folders to be seemingly smoothly streamlined to our desktop, blackboard or phone. There's evidently an elephant in the room"

Third 'elephant' letter, written in the context of the Infra-resistance gathering which took place in Barcelona in July 2025.

The infra-resistance network of networks is an informal gathering of activists, artists, designers and organisers working on and with computational infrastructures. We came together at the end of 2023 to figure out together what techno-practices can be relevant in the context of genocidal violence in Palestine and in solidarity with anti-colonial struggles. It is an ongoing attempt to think through and activate the relationship between dominant computational infrastructures and all forms of oppression.
