ATNOFS argued that such platforms and tools are necessary to navigate our communications and cultural growth beyond the current media oligopolies, and democratise cultural and political expression outside obscure, bureaucratic algorithms and advertising monetisation.

The project responded to the need for continuity, interrelation and support for self-hosted and self-organised computational infrastructures in The Netherlands (Varia, LURK), Romania (hypha), Austria (esc mkl), Greece (Feminist Hack Meetings) and Belgium (Constant). We are excited to share with you the documentation of these sessions.

We will prepare the content for the online publication. Each chapter will summarize their contribution to the travelling server and work together for a documentation handover, including legibility and openness for larger communities. A hands-on moment is foreseen, where we will install a server, or two, or... The notes on this install party will also be made available publicly.

The second encounter of the series will be hosted by LURK at VARIA, Rotterdam, entitled "How to run a small social networking site with your friends".

Whether it is because of online surveillance, doomscrolling, curiosity, the toxic dynamics, the lack of reach, the risk of accounts being removed, the desire for self-governance, etc, there have been multiple reasons to explain why the past years have seen a renewed interest in alternative social media platforms. New federated networked applications and protocols have been developed in tandem to provide similar services as platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. In particular, the free software Mastodon, has gained traction among small communities of practice interested in experimenting with social media under their own control, as it allows them to decide how to run it, why, and for whom. These self-organized spaces however can still be part of a larger network, called the Fediverse.

*However*, while installing such a software is not necessarily the most obvious thing to do, the real challenge only starts *after the installation*, when the software is up and running and all your friends, colleagues, peers, guests, are starting to make use of it.

What does it take to run a Mastodon instance? How does online federation work? What are the politics of the Fediverse? What does it take to moderate an instance? We will try to cover it all, from writing terms and code of conduct, to dealing with account reports or problematic users. But also, how to financially sustain your work? What are ways to make it fun and specific to you? What are further opportunities and threats when doing this?

Enrollment is no longer possible - announcement for information purposes

The second encounter of the series will be hosted by HYPHA, a Romanian initiative aimed at building a digitally non-aligned local community. HYPHA's main urgencies are the questioning of classist and gendered vocabularies within the technological apparatus, the support of knowledge-situated collective emancipation, and the engagement with new-materialist, eco-feminist and hacktivist possibilities of software actualizations and embodiments.

The joining networks ( Varia, LURK, Constant, Feminist Hack Meetings, and esc ) will dedicate two days to develop these ideas in theory and practice. The discussion will start from considering issues such as digital extractivism, machine learning, housing rights, queer and feminist approaches understood in the local context.
By engaging in dialogue with local activists and artists, the potentials of alternative tools for daily practice and for the dissemination of knowledge will be considered, concluding with a hands-on workshop to share the technical knowledge necessary to establish some basics for local networked infrastructure.

A Traversal Network of Feminist Servers is a collaborative project formed around intersectional, feminist, ecological servers whose communities travel between each other to share and extend their skills through live gatherings
In the first chapter, hosted in Varia, we will focus on tools and methods to make space for understanding what feminist publishing infrastructures could be. During the weekend of March 26 and 27, the partners involved in the project - Varia, LURK, Constant, HYPHA, (…)

During the weekend of March 26 and 27, the partners involved in the project - Varia, LURK, Constant, HYPHA, Feminist Hack Meetings, and esc - will be experimenting with publishing infrastructures together. The tools and methods that will emerge can later be used for further knowledge sharing as the project moves location and the programme evolves.

The weekend in Varia will involve a public moment where we will share traces of the project, and extend the collective learning to another layer of audience. And next to that, ATNOFS will be documented through Rosa, a traveling server that will also make the gathered material public at the end of the year.
