Pains Perdus - Verloren Broodjes on Mastodon

With the central position that commercial social media is gaining, Constant wanted to do a push to support federated social media and has re-activated its Mastodon account. The account is hosted on the Lurk server with the handle @constant.

As we are an organisation that engages a lot with editions, versioning and threads from our archives we will also do a monthly post here which we have called Pains Perdus – Verloren Broodjes, where we share a selected fragment from the Constant past. Additionally to this, the account is of course also a way to share some live updates, engage with our network and do some more informal posting.

A wintery collection of on-line pages. Warps invite you to navigate to and through documentation, media and notes. Wefts are thematic constellations that establish relationships between different projects in the Constant Galaxy.

The wefts and warps introduce a specific way of writing, indexing and creating collections. They make use of etherpads (pages for on-line collaborative editing) to connect heterogeneous elements in the Constant galaxy. In parallel, we are activating our archive, developing new ways to access the many sounds, videos and images hosted on the Constant servers. The ongoing revision of Constant's website is a collaboration between Denis Devos, Martino Morandi and Michael Murtaugh together with the rest of the Constant team.

"Digital snapshots, audio recordings, screen grabs, recorded video streams, radio programs, posters, publications, mind maps: for 20 years dribs and drabs of digital detritus have washed ashore the various servers of Constant. Over the last three years, together with Martino Morandi, Femke Snelting, and other members of Constant, we have worked on what we call the sponge, an ecosystem of tools to index, link, and rewrite these digital materials to tell (new) stories of more than two decades of activities."

Warp and weft are terms for the two basic components used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric. Inspired by Constant's rich history of events and their diverse on-line manifestations, Constant is reweaving its on-line presence.

As a way to narrate in-between concerns, projects, events and media, we are inserting wefts into the website structure. Some are dedicated to specific projects and others operate transversally across the site. The wefts introduce a specific way of writing, indexing and making collections. They use etherpad (pages for on-line collaborative editing) to connect between heterogeneous elements in the Constant galaxy. The wefts also open up the possibility for the larger Constant community to co-edit connections.

In parallel, we are activating our archive, developing new ways to access the many sounds, videos and images hosted on the Constant server. We are in the process of connecting twenty years of digital media with corresponding articles. The changes will emerge on the website incrementally in the coming months.

The Spip Content Management System continues to keep track of Constant's events but we enlarged the scope of the interface to show current and historical strata interacting over time.
