In the course of 1948, the lives of the authors Sergej Eisenstein, Louis Jean Lumière, Marie-Elisabeth Belpaire, Jacques Feyder, Cissy van Marxveldt and many others came to an end. Seventy years later, in 2019, the intellectual property protection on their oeuvre expires. Finally, their works enter the Public Domain and are from now on available for reuse for everyone. Cinema Nova, in collaboration with Plus-tôt Te Laat and Constant, celebrates this resurrection with a a playful program around some films.

For this evening, your remixes of Feyder, Griffith Eisenstein and/or other authors who entered the public domain this year are welcome! The proposal is open to any kind of editing or other recreation, in film, analogical video, digital video or animation... duration: from 1 to 5 minutes. Don't hesitate to invent other forms!

On Friday 17 Frifek of the year Zek, a qualifier Demolineutron reduces the Large Zone of Zendium the size of a vibratory pudding, which has dramatic consequences for the lovers Xavan and Jaluka.

This comic by Peter Westenberg is a remix of paintings and drawings by Leon Spilliaert. The publication is created in the framework of Public Domain Month 2018 and will be exhibited in Cinema Nova. The comic will be available in French and Dutch.

Public Domain Month 2018

Every year on January 1st, copyright expires on thousands of works that subsequently enter the Public Domain. In Belgium, copyright protection lasts 70 years after the death of the author and consequently in 2018, the works of authors who died in 1947 will be released.

This year we welcome the creations of amongst others Victor Horta, Anna Kernkamp, Felix Timmermans, Gustave Van de Woestyne, Ernst Lubitsch, William Moulton Marston.

While copyright is a tool for protecting the creation and distribution of artistic work of living artists, the Public Domain is essential because it guarantees free access to works after their death. In the context of a digital culture that drives collective practices and encourages reuse, the importance of the Public Domain is only increasing.

This year Public Domain Day fills the hole month of May with many different activities - edit-a-tons, exhibitions, round tables, screenings, performances - thanks to the effort of our partners: The Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), Mundaneum, MuseomixBE, Cinema Nova, PACKED, Plus tôt Te laat (Pttl), RoSa, Wikimedia BE.

The Death of the Authors, 1945

In 1945 the fifteen year old girl Anne Frank died in the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen. Her diary would have entered the public domain on 1 January 2016, but the arrival of this event caused a lot of commotion. The Anne Frank Foundation, an organisation that was set up by Anne's father, Otto Frank, collects the rights that come from the sales of the world most known diary. Parts of these benefits are regularly donated to charities. They claim that Anne's diary is still under copyright till 1 January 2051.
The book as we know it, published in 1947 in Dutch under the title Het Achterhuis (The Back House), is a compilation by Anne's father, Otto Frank. He copied and pasted fragments from the original manuscripts. And he would also have rewritten parts of the diary in his own style, which would make the book a derived work, and Anne's father the co-author. In this case, the copyright would expire only seventy years after his death in 1980. In the Netherlands and Belgium the fragments of the original manuscripts are in the public domain. The question remains whether the fragments Otto Frank has rewritten can be considered as an artistic intervention.

As an experiment, but also as a paragon of the complexity that is so often hidden behind the notion of the 'public domain',we free Anne's Diary sentence by sentence. You are warmly invited to lend your voice to one or more sentences. You will be able to listen to the spoken sentences in random order.
By recording a sentence you contribute to the construction of Anne Franks collective voice, as a call for worldwide freedom, tolerance and inclusivity. Furthermore, the sentences will be donated as trainingdata for free speech recognition softwares, like Voxforge, which suffer from a crucial lack of Dutch spoken language.

The day the journal will be entirely in the public domain, the textbook will be freely available, as well as this collective audiobook. This promise will be integrated in the testaments of the two authors of this work, Stéphanie Vilayphiou and An Mertens.

In Belgium, copyright protection lasts 70 years after the death of the author and so in 2017, the works of authors who died in 1946 will be liberated. This year we welcome the creations of among others Gertrude Stein, Léon Spilliaert, László Moholy-Nagy and H.G. Wells. While copyright is a tool for protecting the creation and distribution of artistic work of living artists, the Public Domain is essential because it guarantees free access to works after their death. In the context of a digital culture that drives collective practices and encourages reuse, the importance of the Public Domain is only increasing.

For five years now the Royal Library of Belgium, the Center for Recherche Information Droit and Société (CRIDS), Nova Cinema, Constant and this year Plus-tot-te-laat we organize like many organizations in other countries, a day dedicated to the Public Domain.

On Saturday, May 27, 2017 we celebrate the new works that have entered and we critically pay attention to the current system of intellectual property. How can we contribute to a cultural climate in which sharing, reuse and the free dissemination of knowledge is no longer an exception?

Public Domain Day 2016

Copyright is an important tool that allows to protect the creation and distribution of creative works. But Public Domain is also essential because it makes free access to these works possible.
Every year on the first of January, the copyrights of thousands of works expire and these works enter the public domain. In Belgium, the duration of copyright is 70 years. In 2016 the works of authors who passed away in 1945 become free of rights.

Since 4 years, the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), the Centre de Recherche Information Droit et Société CRIDS, Nova Cinema, the association for Arts and Media Constant, and for this edition also Wikimedia Belgium, celebrate these works during a day dedicated to the Public Domain.

This year the particular accent will be on the Diary of Anne Frank and the attempts of the right holders to prolongate its copyright protection, and on the work of Béla Bartók (the Béla Bartók fund is deposited in the the Royal Library). Among the other artists that enter the public domain are Paul Valéry, the Belgian surrealist writer Fernand Dumont, Kathe Kollwitz, the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens... The fate of many of them was marked by the end of the second world war.
2016 also sees the end of the copyright on the works of Adolf Hitler of which the state of Bavaria used to prohibit republication. "Should Mein Kampf be republished?" will be one of the questions debated during the afternoon session in the Royal Library. The evening in Nova contains some more light weight and creative elements ...

Early 20th century the Belgian utopist and documentalist Paul Otlet publishes his Treaty on documentation - the book on the book (Traité de documentation - Le livre sur le livre) in which he envisions the organisation of intellectual work and the future of the book. In 2015 this work entered the public domain, which permitted developers, designers, artists, writers, archivists and copyleft activists to rethink this important publication in the area of the digital book. A small exhibition in the heart of the Royal Library lets you discover several explorations of the form materiality and content of the Livre sur le Livre. These digital experiments, prototypes and re-editions were developed during a booksprint / hackathon that Constant (mondotheque.be) organised in collaboration with Arts², the Mundaneum and Wikisource.

Come play with words and notes of Paul Valéry and Béla Bartók and create partition poetry. The musicians and actors of the cabaret will interprete your new creations.

Gergely Kota (violist) and Quentin Manfroy (flute) will interpret and recreate works by Béla Bartók. The actors of Thalie Envolée will recite poetry of Paul Valéry in parallel. Musicians and actors will also present the partition-poetry created during the workshop.

Turksib is the 2375 km long railway that relates the old Turkestan with Siberia. The Turksib was put in service in 1931 with the idea to favour the development and 'sovietisation' of Central Asia. It allowed to exchange flower from the north with cotton from the south. It was one of the first achievements of the communist regime, constructed in record time under extreme conditions crossing glacial steppes, burning deserts and snowy mountains. Close to fifty thousand workers, of whom many lost their lives, participated in the construction.

Turksib is also the title of this silent black and white propaganda documentary that was adapted for an English speaking audience by John Grierson. A lyrical poetic film that mixes the Russian Stalinist efforts to construct this line in an inhospitable environment with the everyday, ancestral and grim life of the population living along the track of the Turksib.

Fats Waller, Nicolas Tesla, Beatrix Potter en Sergei Rachmaninov zijn enkele van de vele kunstenaars die deze wereld hebben verlaten gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog, in 1942. Hun werk kwam in het publiek domein op 1 januari 2014 en is intussen beschikbaar op het web.
Deze auteurs worden opnieuw tot leven geroepen in de vorm van een "chatbot": een klein computerprogramma dat tussenkomt in een chat-gesprek en dat zich voordoet als een mens. Bots, publiek, printers en geprojecteerd beeld werken samen in een interactieve performance.

Fats Waller, Nicolas Tesla, Beatrix Potter et Sergei Rachmaninov font partie des nombreux artistes qui nous ont quitté pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, en 1942. Leurs oeuvres sont entrées dans le domaine public le 1er janvier 2014 et sont maintenant largement disponible sur le web.
Ces auteurs seront réanimés sous la forme du "chatbot", petit logiciel qui intervient automatiquement dans une conversation chatée en prétendant être un humain. Les bots, le public, les imprimantes et les images projetées collaborent dans une performance interactive.
