OpenField: A gathering

Constant is invited to participate, and partly host, the program OpenField as a long time research collaborator of a.pass.

"OpenField is a five-day gathering dedicated to the possible futures and autonomies of artistic research.

Through these questions, a.pass invited three artistic collectives,One Field Fallow (BE), Topote de Acahual (MX), and Arquitectura Expandida (CO), to each identify an urgent topic at the end of their research residency. Their responses have become the titles of the first three days of the gathering: Scripts and Protocols for Collective Spaces, Foreshadowing Amid Turbulent Futures, Manifest Everyday Urban Utopias. Three topics to be explored collectively by a multiform constellation of research-based practices.

The fourth day starts off on the right foot: Breakfast for Insatiable Researchers invites you to meet art workers in Brussels who have long supported artistic research, mostly without structural funding. Directly in the spaces where they usually work. Food for thought, for practices, and more! In the afternoon, the gathering documentation group will share traces from previous OpenField moments during a Memory-Making Session, and create space for contributions from everyone.

The fifth day is dedicated to a working session, Collabora(c)tion: Futuring Artistic Research, for organisations, educational institutions, and collectives who want to explore how to join forces and continue (or begin) creating shared spaces, time, and energy for artistic research."

Artistic commission #1: Hormonobotanik.wiki

In 2025, Contant supported the work of Flo*Souad Benaddi, Leo Ren O'faigain and Doriane Timmermans within Hormonobotanik.

Hormonobotanik is a project focusing on medicinal plants, their phytohormonal properties and their uses in transition processes. This long-term artistic research, initially begun out of necessity, has taken the form of visual installations as well as textile objects and publications, which have circulated in queer circles.

It started with Leo Ren and Flo*Souad cooking for and with people who like to mess around with their hormones and gender. The recipes came from their self-taught research on phytohormones and their Moroccan and Japanese cultural influences. In order to share these recipes, they organised participatory workshops and public events.
Together, they compiled a corpus which stimulated the desire to create a wiki; to document and preserve what was happening and what they wanted to happen. Doriane Timmermans joined the project in 2023 as a friend and collaborator to discuss the first temporary web platform and then to work on the creation of the wiki, supported by Constant.

This wiki is part archive, part working tool, but also a recipe book. It is a space that allows them to name and bring to life their work and that of others, in a simple and viable way.

Constant_V: Hormonobotanik.wiki finissage

Hormonobotanik is a project focusing on medicinal plants, their phytohormonal properties and their uses in transition processes, initiated by Flo*Souad Benaddi in 2019 then joined by Leo Ren O'faigain and Doriane Timmermans. This long-term artistic research, initially begun out of necessity, has taken the form of visual installations as well as textile objects and publications, which have circulated in queer circles.

Over the previous weeks, the project occupied the window of Constant by planting, watering, and cultivating the hormonobotanik wiki. The window was used as a physical interface to connect to the wiki evolution, but also as a place to make visible the process at work.

Join us for the finissage taking place on thursday 12 of February at 18h at our office rue du fort 5A in Brussels, where the artists will propose an activity to make our own cookie cutter, the tasting of a homemade drink, a visit to the expanded hormonobotanik wiki and finally hand out stickers of the project.

Hormonobotanik is a project focusing on medicinal plants, their phytohormonal properties and their uses in transition processes, initiated by Flo*Souad Benaddi in 2019. This long-term artistic research, initially begun out of necessity, has taken the form of visual installations as well as textile objects and publications, which have circulated in queer circles.

In 2023, following an online residency, the collaboration with Leo Ren O'Faigain blossomed with Infusion2Gâteau, a first recipe composed of phytohormonal ingredients that was sent by email. We began to pool our research and imagine other recipes with the desire to put in practice our questions about gender in a 'gourmand' way. Nourished and inspired by online and offline self-support networks, we want to make accessible the corpus we are building. In 2024, with Doriane Timmermans, the idea of a tool for collective work, archiving, and dissemination of the project began to take shape: the hormonobotanik.wiki

Since November 2025, hormonobotanik is using the vitrine of Constant as a physical interface to connect to the wiki evolution, but also as a place to make visible the process at work.

Rattus urbanicus study days

Join us for two study days on the 10 & 11 December around the figure of the urban rat in the context of the yearly trajectory called Otherworldly communications.

These study days are meant to critically engage with different conceptions of the 'other' as in: other than human, otherworldly and otherings. We convoke the figure of the urban rat to speak about notions of invasiveness and out-of-place-ness, and to examine how the gesture of othering normalises and fuels systemic violence. These study days will bring us closer to so-called invasive/unwanted species while discussing biosocial order, sterile urban spaces and, consequently, who gets to (visibly) occupy them.

During these two days, we will scratch at several layers through a visit to the Sewer Museum of Brussels, contributions and activations from the Invasive Species Working Group, collective readings and a speculative writing session by Maru Mushtrieva.*

The Invasive Species Working Group will be represented by Yi Zang and Hwa Young Jung
Yi Zang designed the board game Rat King: Migration of the Brown Rat. This board game is designed around the transnational, trans-century migration trajectory of the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, dock rat, Hanover rat, or Norwegian rat. Their numerous names may reflect the species' long journey and its many encounters with humans across different times, spaces, and regions.
Originating in northern China, Mongolia and Siberia, the brown rat has now spread to every continent except Antarctica. They have become the most widespread rodent across most of Europe and North America, firmly established in worldwide ecosystems.

A “rat king” is a rare phenomenon in which a group of rats becomes physically tangled together by their tails, which has been recorded in many parts of the world. Yi understands it as a kind of glitch in everyday reality, an entanglement that appears when enough encounters and conditions allow it to emerge. Through this game, we will collectively speculate on the movements of brown rat families and explore how their migration paths intersect with climate change, colonial navigation, human expansion, global trade, and ongoing efforts to eradicate them. What other forms of glitches might emerge within this continual flow of reality?

Hwa Young Jung has a practice of co-creating projects, often using games and play to explore social issues.
She is working on an international collaboration between Liverpool (UK) and Seoul (South Korea) to co-create an extravagant K-pop music video about how to live harmoniously with urban wild animals on a changing planet.
Exploring the intersection of the climate emergency and migrant justice, we question ideas ‘native', ‘alien', ‘invasive' when applied to animals and what parallels might we draw between government policies towards urban wildlife and the treatment of people in new lands - all through the joy of K-pop.

Maru Mushtrieva is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker based in Berlin and Brussels. With a diverse practice spanning across performance art, sound installations, and collaborative projects, their work explores themes of identity, social dynamics, hosting, material storytelling and the intersection of extractive practices and technology with contemporary society and environment.

This drawing made by A.L. Tarter around the 1940S is titled A rat leaving a ship via the mooring rope, thus spreading the plague. It was aimed at the making of an educational film showing the transmission and effects of the plague, especially the role of rats. Now contemporary researches contest the major role the rats have allegedly played in the spreading of the plague.

That's why we decided to write you this letter: as we are facing down another September-September still stuck with everyday digital infrastructures provided by companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI and HP that are, as we know, involved in militarization and genocide. Another year of zoom meetings, google calendar and sharepoint folders to be seemingly smoothly streamlined to our desktop, blackboard or phone. There's evidently an elephant in the room"

Third 'elephant' letter, written in the context of the Infra-resistance gathering which took place in Barcelona in July 2025.

The infra-resistance network of networks is an informal gathering of activists, artists, designers and organisers working on and with computational infrastructures. We came together at the end of 2023 to figure out together what techno-practices can be relevant in the context of genocidal violence in Palestine and in solidarity with anti-colonial struggles. It is an ongoing attempt to think through and activate the relationship between dominant computational infrastructures and all forms of oppression.

Infra-resistance meetings: Dual (ab)use

Constant joins the next infra-resistance meeting in Barcelona

Infra-resistance meetings are intensive, trans-local, semi-public gatherings around and for internationalist infrastructural resistance against deadly regimes and extractive assumptions.

Spread over three half-day sessions, this edition invites a number of practitioners to critically engage with the concept of ‘dual-use' – a term referring to technologies and materials that can be used for both military and civilian applications. The event provides an opportunity to explore the concept and its underlying assumptions, as well as to politicise the issues of technology and dual-use categorisations as a step towards more robust, meaningful public discourse.

˚⊱ Waste is the space ⊰˚ study day

Join us for a study day on waste and toxicity in the context of the yearly trajectory called Otherworldly communications.

Otherworldly communications is framed by researching interspecies cohabitation and communication which, we hope, will tell us about modes of relating to and engaging with technological regimes and apparatus different from those that are damaging worlds.

This day is meant to study the different ways that human-induced toxicity permeates soils, matter, bodies and relations across multiple space-time realities. If toxicity tends to seem invisible to us, it is nonetheless a force forging spaces, more-than-human capacities, coexistences and futurities.

Inspired by techno-queer-feminist calls to develop radical imaginaries and practices based on surrounding and encompassing toxicities, we will be proposing various points of attention to orient the day, such as : the longevity of nuclear waste as a starting point for developing forms of thinking and being with a toxic territory rather than against it, the study of a restricted toxic space as a method for grasping issues acting on different scales, mixing capitalist and colonial violence, speculative exercises in testing environmental toxicity, and perhaps more.

We will be joined by Nerea Calvillo Gonzales, Cécile Massart and Olivia Joret who will share their researches and practices that are deeply implicated in different forms of toxicity.

Nerea Calvillo is a Spanish architect and researcher who investigates the intersection between architecture, science and technology, as well as feminist studies, new materials and urban political ecology. Nerea is specialized in the research of the visual representation of air in the atmosphere and is the author of the book "Aeropolis, Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds"

The work of Cécile Massart is focused on researching a new means of conveying the memory of radioactive waste sites in the landscape. She has developed an architectural vocabulary to identify the slow level disposal waste site : the markers or archi-sculptures. She practices engraving, photography, computer graphics, video, sculpture and installations, and creates artist's books.

Olivia Joret studied Visual Arts and Contemporary Critical Theory at Goldmiths College, London, UK and Painting at Sint-Lucas Hogeschool, Brussels, BE. She obtained a Master of Arts at the European Graduate School, Saas-Fee, CH and Valetta, MA. In her work, she seeks to elaborate an aesthetics of gommage, a term that refers to the plasticity of a (re)atunement between what could be a historical homage or dommage, drawing on Bracha Ettinger's esthetics of wit(h)nessing, and the materiality of paint.
